Common questions about CELPIP scoring

Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?+
Neither is “easier” in general — they test the same skills against the same CLB scale. CELPIP is fully computer-based with North American accents and Canadian content, which most newcomers settling in Canada find more familiar than IELTS’s British-leaning material and paper-or-computer Speaking interviews. If you’re aiming for Canadian PR, both are accepted by IRCC and convert to the same CLB.
What CELPIP score is good for Express Entry?+
For most Express Entry applicants, CLB 9 across all four skills is the sweet spot — it unlocks the second-highest CRS bracket per skill (~24 points each, roughly 100 across four skills). CLB 10 adds a few more points but the marginal cost in study time is usually higher than the marginal CRS gain.
Do I need the same score in every skill?+
Yes for most pathways. FSW, CEC, and most regulators require you to hit the floor in all fourskills, not just an average. One weak section (often Writing or Speaking) can make you ineligible despite strong overall English. AscendPrep’s diagnostic surfaces your weakest skill so you can focus there.
How long are CELPIP scores valid?+
Two years from the test date for most Canadian immigration and regulatory uses. Plan your application timing so your scores don’t expire mid-process.
Can I retake CELPIP if my score is too low?+
Yes — there’s no waiting period and no limit on attempts. Most candidates who don’t hit their target score on the first try succeed on attempt two, usually after fixing one or two specific weaknesses (commonly Speaking task pacing or Writing word-count discipline).
